  • Co-op Community Fund 2022 Donation

    9th November 2022

We are thrilled to receive a donation of over £1,400 from the Co-op Local Community Fund that will allow us to carry on our work for men of the Axe Valley community.

  • First Archery Session

    9th September 2022

Our two acre Shortlands men’s shed garden has plenty of room to grow vegetables and fruit for the community, plus it also lends itself to other activities, so we just held our first archery session there.

  • Summer Party

    6th August 2022

Our members and their partners all came together at our Shortlands men’s shed garden in Axbridge for a summer celebration with good food and musical fun. We had to put up shelters to protect us from the unusual weather – bright sunshine for once. We also put up a gazebo as the stage for our resident Men’s Shed band (suggestions on a postcard please for a suitable name!)

  • Community garden stone donation

    25th July 2022

Heidelberg Materials staff from Batts Combe Quarry in Cheddar just visited our Shortlands men’s shed garden with a donation of 30 tonnes of stone chippings. For the full story see the Batts Combe Community News website

  • Chew Valley Community Farm Visit

    24th September 2021

Several of our members visited the community farm in Chew Magna to seek inspiration for developing our new two-acre Shortlands men’s shed garden in Axbridge.

  • Fighting Digital Exclusion

    15th March 2021

Throughout the various lockdowns and COVID19 restrictions over the past 12 months we have been concerned about the plight of school children who have not had access to computers for home based learning. Many well-off families already have one or more desktops, laptops, or tablets. Poorer families may have been given laptops by their school, but other families – those who are just about managing – have really struggled because there has been no state-provided help for them. That’s where we stepped in!

Mike and John from Axe Valley Men’s Shed have repurposed over 170 laptops donated by the local community. After any private data has been wiped, we install Google ChromeOS to make them into ChromeBooks, and give the good PAT safety-checked machines to Cheddar Vale Lions who manage distribution to local pupils across Cheddar, Axbridge, Wedmore, Shipham and the surrounding area. The remainder, which were unfit for use, have been responsibly recycled by Byteback IT in Bristol.

  • Finally Open!

    28th October 2020

After a false start back in September due to the COVID19 “rule of six”, we are now fully open. Hand washing and face masks are still the order of the day, but we are here, so come and find us!

We wouldn’t be here without grants from both Cheddar and Axbridge Councils, and the support of Travis Perkins & CRS Building Supplies for their help and support. Thanks everyone!

  • All Dressed Up No Place To Go

    9th September 2020

Our new “shed” in Cheddar is fitted out and we are ready to go. Unfortunately COVID lockdown rules mean we can’t meet here yet. Hopefully that will change in a few days time.

  • Building Out Our New Shed

    15th August 2020

The reception area of our new “shed” in Cheddar is almost finished! Just sanding down and oiling left to do. Love the window – half a reclaimed door and the wall which is lined with old pallets!

Thanks to Travis Perkins and CRS Building Supplies for their help.
